Nigerian mobile network service provider, Airtel has revealed that it sent N1,000 worth of data and airtime to its subscribers on Monday, refuting claims that it was hacked.
News had gone round on social media in the early hours of Monday that Airtel was hacked by the famous community of hackers, Anonymous.
However, in a message sent to some of its subscribers, Airtel disclosed that the free airtime and data was its way of apologizing and compensating customers for network disruptions experienced on Friday, October 16th.
One of the messages some customers got reads:
“Dear customer, we apologise for the recent service disruption experienced on October 16. Normal service has been restored and your line will be credited with five minutes of on-net calls and 100MB of data both valid for one day.”
The step is in line with Nigerian Communications Commission’s compensation policy for the industry.
